South African Wine Country….Stellenbosch

I've mentioned before that I love Cape Town because it is essentially just like California but half the price.  Well, California has Napa Valley, Sonoma and Paso Robles and Cape Town has Stellenbosch and Frenchhoek just 45 minutes away.  Same same…..just like I said.

The wine in South Africa was absolutely lovely….and inexpensive thanks again to the current exchange rate.  The vineyards in South Africa were painted with lush green vines with a mountainous backdrop, it was incredible.

I was super lucky this weekend because my friend Shirley, from Mozambique, popped into town to explore wine country with me.  Our visit was met with torrential rain that postponed our trip one day knocking Betty's Bay and the penguins off of our excursion plans.  It turned out to be a good thing since the rains flooded the road between Betty's Bay and Stellenbosch, but not the roads from Cape Town.  Plus, what else were we to do in a beach and mountain climbing town in the rain?  Drinking wine was a perfect alternative game plan.

We had plans to hit 4 vineyards, so I hired a car to chauffeur us around town safely and we stayed the night at the Stellenbosch Hotel.  The day started with the Stellenbosch open market which was still pretty good considering half of the vendors didn't show up because the grounds were semi-flooded.  The food looked spectacular, but we didn't stay long since we thought we were at the wrong farmers market and we had to check into the hotel and get ready for our chauffeur.

We were picked up around 12:30 in a grey sedan and hit vineyard after vineyard each one more beautiful than the last…I think.  I was pretty tipsy after the 3rd vineyard and we were able to visit 5 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday.

I made Shirley do this….but I think she'll be glad she did

 VINEYARD #3: DeMORGENZON

DeMorgenzon was interesting.  The girl that did our tasting was telling us that there is one patch of grapes that was divided in two.  Theoretically, they should produce grapes that are exactly the same since the soil conditions are the same, the sunlight is the same and they are harvested right next to each other. However, one patch has classical music played to it 24-hours a day and those grapes mature 3 weeks later than its twin harvest.  They think that the bacteria in the soil reacts differently to the music keeping the grapes on the vine longer and producing a higher quality wine.  Interesting, right?

This tasting room looked very "Las Vegas"...

We made it just in time….

Shirley is DONE!

Winning

Its safe to assume that I fell asleep at approximately 6 PM that night.

On Sunday, Shirley and I headed to Frenchhoek to see how those vineyards fared compared to Stellenbosch.  Needless to say, the weather was incredible.  The torrential rains produced crystal-clear air and grand puffy clouds embracing an animated blue sky.  As you can see from the photos, the mountains looked incredible sandwiched between the bright green grass and absurdly blue sky.

Sunday afternoon, we drove back to Cape Town and caught some live music in Du Vaal park with my friend Gil.  More wine….more cheese….more fun.  It was a great weekend.  The rain was no match for excellent company, good (and bad) wine and a designated driver.

Cape Town…7 Reasons why I LOVE it there

If Namibia was amazing and rustic and adventurous, Cape Town was the polar opposite.  It truly is a soft landing into Africa.  In fact, it has all of the amenities of home and thanks to the power of the US dollar, it is all half price.  The US dollar, today, is 10.20R:$1 making everything VERY affordable and incrementally improving the likelihood that I will come back to Cape Town some day….potentially for good.

Things I love about Cape Town….
1. The Ocean meets the mountains meets the city…incredible

Having a mimosa lunch at the V & A Waterfront in the Central Business District
Seapoint and the Atlantic Ocean
The "City Bowl"

2. The food….
I did not have a bad meal in all of South Africa…plus, I did not get food poisoning or weird stomach shit for the duration of my stay.

3. Amazing nightlife
Anyone that knows me in real life, knows I love halloween and any occasion there is to dress up.  The week AFTER Halloween, a lovely woman named Yolanda had a Cirque Le Freak costume party and everyone that attended went all out.  There were corsets and petticoats and circus freaks everywhere.  She hired a burlesque dancer, fire jugglers and a 4-piece band consisting of an accordion, banjo, saxophone and guitar…. amazing.

I decided to go as a lion tamer since we all had to go as circus freaks.  I figured it was an excellent opportunity to wear my leather pants and I could pull it off with limited funds.  I went to a Chinese shop (think dollar store with way better stuff) and purchased some electrical tape, a fascinator and a jump rope and made an amazing whip, bracelets and a studded collar for my tattooed friend.  Since I only spend 50R ($4.75) on my costume, I decided to go to a salon and have them create an amazing faux hawk for me….all I can say is SUCCESS.  This was an amazing party and a super fun night!

The night ended at Orphanage and Aces bars and someone definitely ended up making out with a chick in the bar and then blacking out….no, guess again, it was not me.

 4. The beaches…
There are so many beaches in the greater Cape Town area, it is ridiculous.  Sara and Fiona took me to a secluded little beach called Langebaan where there friends went kite surfing and we went stand up paddle boarding.  Surprisingly, it was my first time actually doing it rather than watching.  The weather was a bit windy on the main beach, but in Shark Bay, the weather was perfect and the lagoon was amazingly beautiful.

I'd rather tan than kite surf, thanks.

This is exercise?  It's kind of fun.
 5. Amazing outdoor markets
Every weekend, we go to a different outdoor market.  Since there are so many, I couldn't even attend them all.  I was able to shop and eat in Hout Bay Marketplace, Kirstenbosch Market, Stellenbosch Market, the Biscuit Mill, Woodstock Market, Green Square Market and other that I just found while wandering...

 6. (and most importantly) The PEOPLE
Cape Townians and those that have been imported are amazing.  I made amazing friends while in Capetown and I'm so, so fortunate to have found a group of people that I instantly connected with so strongly.  I truly made a half a dozen friends for life.  Sorry guys you're stuck with me….until I unfriend you on Facebook (most likely on your respective birthdays :) )

7. The Colors.
The stars, the Gods, Mother Nature, whomever... blessed this place with the most magnificent colors in the palette.   The sunsets, the grass, the ocean, the flowers and the buildings produced colors that I did not know existed aside from a Pantone Color Chart.  They are inspiring and breath-taking.  Enjoy some of the colors of Cape Town, filter-free.
